SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Healthy habits are common lessons learned at McKingley Brighton Magnet School. On Wednesday, the students learned how to get to and from school safely.
Students in grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grande celebrated International Walk to School Day. The kids walked around the school's neighborhood with teachers, members of law enforcement, and the Safe Kids New York Coalition.
One teacher organizer said the event is about encouraging a healthy lifestyle, and staying safe.
"We want them walking with a buddy, especially when it's at night, especially with the younger kids, walking with an adult to and from school, even when they're going to the playground or going somewhere outside school, we want them to be safe," said Benjamin Steuerwalt, a physical education teacher.
McKinley's Walk This Way event was one of 1,000 events held nationwide.
