SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A former Syracuse journalist has been granted temporary release from a Liberian prison.
Rodney Sieh was the publisher of Front Page Africa. The paper did a story on a government report that accused a former official of corruption. The official proceeded to file a suit against Sieh and the paper, and caused the paper to shut down.
Sieh was imprisoned for not being able to pay a $1.5 million fine. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Liberia's Ministry of Justice granted a Compassionate Release for 30 days.
The reason for release is unclear, but Sieh's attorney told the CPJ he contracted malaria while in prison. It is unknown if Sieh will be forced to go back to prison after the 30 days is over.
