On Wednesday, Utica's new Bass Pro Shop held it's grand opening. As YNN's Cara Thomas reports, thousands of people traveled from near and far to get a first look at the highly anticipated store.
UTICA, N.Y. -- Thousands of eager people waited for the chance to enter an outdoorsman's paradise at the new Bass Pro Shop in Utica.
"We need more sporting stores around here, we don't have a lot of them so this is a great sporting store," said Tony Tanaury, a Cassville resident.
Although it's taken months to get Utica's new Bass Pro Shop up and running, it only took a matter of seconds to cut the ribbon and watch new customers flood through the doors.
Some people just wanted to browse and see what the store had to offer. However, others were on a mission to check out the new gear for fall hunting season.
Eric Houser, a Johnstown resident, said, "We got an ad in our local news paper and my daughter is 12 years old and taken up bow hunting this year, and we found some great deals in the ad, so here we are tonight and we were successful."
"Hunting boots, hunting clothes, stuff so I can go hunting," added his daughter Alexis.
Checkout lines wrapped around the store and a lot of money was spent. However, not all of Wednesday's profit will go into the Bass Pro Shop's bank account.
The grand opening's theme was an evening of conservation. For every dollar spent, fifty cents will be donated to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's More Fish campaign.
The store's general manager, Joe Chaney, said, "It's all geared towards conservation. Which means saving the wild life until the next generation and the generation after that and the generation after that. That is what's important for the Bass Pro Shops."
Customers say they got a great first impression of the new store and definitely plan on coming back.
Bass Pro Shop will be hosting special events all week, including a shooting range, the King of Bucks Exhibit, and free giveaways.
