WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- One state lawmaker is trying to make sure the men and women who served their country are getting all the benefits they're entitled to.
New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman hosted a forum in Watertown Friday afternoon. He spoke about some of the perks veterans can get, including property tax exemptions. Specifically people who served from 1990 to present day could deserve up to a 25 percent reduction in their tax levy. But the process to get that exemption can be confusing.
"It is a huge financial benefit to a lot of veterans. We've determined that there's some folks getting it, there are other folks who are not getting it. We think a lot of people have been discouraged just from applying for it because of the confusing nature of the forms and the information they are getting," Schneiderman said.
Schneiderman also talked about scammers that have been targeting military vets. He offered a list of tips to prevent theft. You can find all of the information at www.ag.ny.gov.
