WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- Recently de-classified documents have shown that the government used a code name for "Area 51" in Nevada. That name was Watertown.
The codename was in honor of then CIA Director and Watertown native Allen Dulles. What's not known is what actually happened there.
So as UFO and alien conspiracy theories continue, the City of Watertown is planning to join in on the fun Friday by naming a spot in its Thompson Park "Watertown's Area 51" The spot is also known as the Thompson Park Vortex.
For decades, there have been rumors of strange noises and disappearances in the area between the zoo and the golf course.
"I thought, well, let's try to tie that together. So I had a local sign company make a sign designating the spot. We're going to dedicate that on Friday. Word is there's going to be an alien visiting Watertown that night. I think families will want to show up. There'll be candy for the kids. It'll be a good time," said Watertown Mayor Jeff Graham.
The ceremony to celebrate "Watertown's Area 51" is set for 7 p.m. Friday at the Vortex by the Rotary Walking Trails.
