Drivers along Route 5 in the Town of Camillus are seeing a project finally take shape after nearly a decade in the making. As YNN's Sarah Blazonis tells us, construction is underway on Township 5.
TOWN OF CAMILLUS, N.Y. -- After eight years and several hurdles, work is finally underway on a project aimed at bringing new life to the Town of Camillus.
Crews are in the early stages of construction on Township 5 along Route 5. When it's finished, it will include stores, a movie theater, and residential and office space.
The plan has been in the works since 2005.
The Camillus Town Supervisor says developers faced a number of obstacles through the years, including National Grid lines that go through the property. For awhile, she said it seemed like the project might not become a reality.
"The economy failed in 2008, and we thought, 'Oh, dear, here it goes.' These gentlemen have been persistent, they've stuck with it, they're from the area, and it's happening," said Town Supervisor Mary Ann Coogan.
More than 500 jobs are expected to be created when all of the businesses in Township 5 are up and running.
