A local non-profit is gearing up for the holiday season, but needs your help to make sure the holidays are joyful for everyone. YNN's Brad Vivacqua tells how you can help the Syracuse Area Salvation Army.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Although the holidays may seem far away still, now is the time for volunteers to sign up to help the Salvation Army with its annual Christmas Bureau Distribution on December 23.
The organization needs about 1,000 volunteers to help serve nearly 1,700 families in the area. In addition, Salvation Army is also looking for volunteers for its annual Red Kettle campaign. That begins in just a few weeks.
Volunteers are needed in about 30 location to ring bells for a total of 12,000 hours. Groups, corporations, and individuals can all sign up to help for just a few hours at a time.
According to coordinators, this is also the perfect time of year to schedule a community drive in your workplace.
"The community drives this campaign for us, and Onondaga County really comes through, and this year we hope to have a bigger turnout. Our need is bigger this year, so obviously we need more volunteers to help control that," said Andrew Sabbaghzadeh, Syracuse Area Salvation Army Volunteer Coordinator.
