The North Country opened its first CrossFit gym. As YNN's Elizabeth Jeneault reports, it will have you burning fat and calories, and provide a sense of camaraderie.
JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Up until this past September, Gracey Wike was teaching people CrossFit out of her garage. As word spread, Gracey and her husband decided to officially open the North Country's first CrossFit gym.
"CrossFit is the most fun and the best when you have a group of people, so now we're able to train up to eight people at once and its much better," said Wike.
Members say it's most fun in a group setting because people cheer each other on, and support each other through all that pain and exhaustion.
"It's a community like no other, we have the army family but CrossFit definitely brings the family to working out," said Shane Westridge.
Ninety percent of the people who work out at Messenger CrossFit are connected with Fort Drum. Westridge and his wife recently moved to the area and say the gym has made them feel at home.
With Shane set to leave for Afghanistan this week, there is comfort in knowing his wife will be in good hands.
"She just found out she's pregnant, so better yet for her to keep working out but to also have that community around her," said Shane.
"I can't stop even though he's gone, this is going to keep my mind right, keep me going," explained his wife Sarah .
Meanwhile, the extra training Shane's had, will help him do the same.
"You push yourself obviously at work for the Army standard but then to make your own standard, you get to come to a place like this and push yourself further than you ever thought you could go," said Shane.
With that extra push, Shane says his body is prepared for the possibility of going into combat overseas.
