SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A playground was rededicated in honor of a slain Syracuse police officer 23 years after his death.
Wallie Howard Jr. was killed in the line of duty on October 30th, 1990 while working as an undercover narcotics investigator.
Wednesday, he was honored at the playground outside his former elementary school, the Van Dyne School. The playground was recently rebuilt after it was destroyed by arson in 2009.
Syracuse University and the Police Retirees Association helped lead the project. His family says it is comforting to know the playground allows his legacy to live on.
"It's a somber event. Anything I do reminds me that I am missing my father. It's sad, but it's good knowing people are remembering him and remembering what he stood for," said Wallie Howard III.
The event also honored former Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor for her role in pursuing the completion of the rebuilding project.
