BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- A Binghamton neighborhood was shock Monday as they deal with news that someone was murdered in the city’s First Ward.
"I just don't get it," said Binghamton resident Elton Hawkins. "Why would somebody that age do something like that? You ruined your whole life, you're going to spend the rest of your life in prison. Once they catch him. For what?"
Binghamton police say they responded to 32 Mygatt Street in the city around 6 a.m. after recovering a report of a dispute, something neighbors say, isn't out of the norm.
"There is always a lot going on in those houses over there. It's loud at night. When you drive by, there's a lot of people yelling at your car," said Binghamton resident Casey Wolanin.
"I'm surprised it happened like that, but I'm not surprised, because recently this neighborhood, there's been a lot of shootings on that block, on the other side, the two apartments up there, a fire was set," said Binghamton resident Verties Toran.
But when police arrived on Monday, they found a critically injured female who said her boyfriend had been murdered. Binghamton Chief Joseph Zikuski says patrolmen then noticed that the home was on fire.
"Upon arrival, we found fire showing out of two windows on the second floor, basically a bedroom on the second floor was on fire. Companies advanced up there and knocked it out in five minutes," said Binghamton Fire Department Assistant Chief Steve Faughnan.
Once it was out, the body of a male victim was discovered. Police say they believe he was murdered.
Those who live nearby say, it's a close-knit neighborhood and they're saddened by what's happened.
Wolanin said, "It's a far-fetched thing to think about. I don't even think people consider it typically, but to have it so close to home is a little disconcerting."
Hawkins said, "I knew his mom, I didn't really know him. The guy who got killed. I know his mom. God bless her, I hope she can get through it."
Police say the female victim was transported to a hospital and is in critical condition.
