NEW YORK STATE -- Has Rudy Giuliani decided not to run for Governor of New York in 2010? The New York Times is citing associates close to the former New York City Mayor as saying the Republican is not interested in the job, but spokesmen for Giuliani deny the claim, saying he has not yet made up his mind.
Meanwhile, the man who declared his intentions to seek the GOP nomination two months ago says he's not waiting to hear what Giuliani decides. Rick Lazio, in Central New York to meet with local republicans, says he remains focused on Albany. He says there is plenty of room on the public stage for Giuliani regardless of whether he decides to run for Governor.
"Rudy Giuliani is a person with great talent and I know he wants to continue to have a voice in the public debate. He certainly has developed a strong reputation in the area of Homeland Security and National security. I think he'll continue to speak out on those issues, whether he's a private citizen or whether he's in public life," Lazio said.
For the first time, a Siena Poll out this week shows Lazio with a slight lead over Governor David Paterson in a potential showdown next year, but running far behind Andrew Cuomo.
