Bruno deliberations will head into fifth day

By: Steve Ference

Jurors will be back Thursday to continue deliberating in the federal corruption trial of former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno. Jurors worked through the day Wednesday, asking for a few clarifications. Our Steve Ference has been following the trial and has the latest from the federal courthouse.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- "I'm very, very pleased, feel very, very confident and very optimistic," said Joe Bruno who was back in federal court on Wednesday hoping the continued jury deliberations are a good sign for him as everyone tries to predict which way the jury might judge the former Senate majority leader.

"I thought it clarified transactions between business people that were arm's length," said Bruno.

Jurors asked for a readback of businessman Jared Abbruzzese's testimony; his payments to Bruno for consulting work for three of his companies make up three of the eight counts. Jurors asked to hear about Bruno's premature termination from one of those companies. They also wanted to hear about a fourth count related to Abbruzzese, in which he paid Bruno $80,000 through the sale of a racing horse, according to prosecutors. Abbruzzese said he simply wanted to end his joint ownership of the horse with Bruno because he anticipated getting involved in the horse racing rights bid at the time for New York State and basically paid Bruno as part of a global solution, also allowing him to cut ties after the early termination of Bruno.

So jurors continue their deliberations, passing the 30-hour mark, even as on Tuesday they said they had come to an agreement on two of the counts, but simply couldn't find Bruno guilty or not guilty on the other six.

"I hoped sooner rather than later this jury comes out with not guilty on all eight counts," said Bruno.

Now with jurors asking for readbacks relating to perhaps as many as six of the eight counts, Joe Bruno and his family continue to wait as deliberations move to a fifth day.
