LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- The New York State Department of Transportation is now proposing a ban to keep all commercial vehicles off the Onondaga Lake Parkway after countless crashes into the CSX railroad bridge.

Last month, a study was released by the state looking into the low-clearance bridge and how to prevent crashes from happening like the one last fall involving a Megabus, which claimed four lives.

Tractor trailers and vehicles more than 10 feet, nine inches high are already banned from traveling the parkway, but DOT officials say their concern is with motorists who are unaware of their vehicles' dimensions.

Since the majority of vehicles over that height are commercial vehicles, the DOT says excluding all commercial vehicles would reduce the potential number of crashes.

If approved, commercial vehicles would have to take Old Liverpool Road, which runs parallel to the parkway.
