SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It' something that hasn't happened since 1995. The television stations in greater Syracuse are putting aside competition to work together for a good cause.

The Central New York broadcasting community is doing just that by joining the McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center to bring awareness to the sexual, verbal and physical abuse of children.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. In response to national and local headlines, the Syracuse TV stations are collaborating on an hour-long special on the issue. It's called Protecting Our Children and it airs later this month, on April 25th, on all of the TV stations in the market.

"We all know that news stations compete. But this issue is so important, that we decided to come together to let people know that we all care about our community and of course, our kids, and that there are resources out there where we can all do our part to stop child abuse," YNN anchor Julie Chapman said.

"We have amazing assets in our community that can help those families and those children. And that we need to do more to help them and to support them and believe the children that are being abused," said Julie Cecile, McMahon/Ryan Executive Director.

YNN will be airing the special on April 25th at 7 p.m. And that morning, from 6 to 9 a.m., and again from 5 to 9 p.m., volunteers from the Onondaga County Child Abuse Response Team will man a phone bank to answer questions about everything from the warning signs to how to report suspected child abuse.
