ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A week after being presented with seven redistricting options to help close a $10.2 million budget gap, the Elmira City School District has narrowed the choices down to two.

The school board will choose from two design plans, both of which would close Ernie Davis Middle School. Both concepts also call for a single high school. The building students would attend for middle school and high school is the real difference between the plans.

A committee will be formed that includes members of the public to help make a decision on which plan to choose. That decision will come by May 16th, so changes can be made for the upcoming school year.

"We still have students, we have teachers, and we have parents from May 16th until the end of June. So you have a collective audience to be able to provide transition support. Meet the principal night, go to your new school, find out where the library is, gymnasium, restrooms. That is a key time to be able to implement this," said Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter.

The superintendent says each concept would save the district millions of dollars over the next three years.
