Ultimate Exercise: Part I Soldiers learning Functional Fitness

Earlier this year, our Brian Dwyer gave us a very special look at how the Army is using technology to help soldiers train for battle, but sometimes it takes just good old fashioned hard work. We've all see the videos of soldiers waking up early, running, jogging, push and pull ups. Well, the Army is about to go through another major transformation, changing the physical training from the basics to complete battle functionality. Over the course of this week, Brian will take us inside this new daily workout, Functional Fitness, and how this "Ultimate Exercise" is getting soldiers ready for anything.

Ultimate Exercise: Part II Soldiers undergo training in the water

Every morning, the soldiers of Fort Drum wake up and begin what's called PT, or physical training. But those jumping jacks and push-ups are not getting the body ready for what a soldier actually goes through overseas. So the Army is overhauling the entire program, gearing it toward battle functionality. As part of our week-long look at these major changes to the daily routine, our Brian Dwyer shows us one of the most terrifying and intense, yet completely realistic, workouts a soldier will take part in. Today, Fort Drum moves this "Ultimate Exercise" into the water.

Ultimate Exercise: Part III Battle functionality

Every morning, when our alarms are going off and some of us are trying to sneak in one more push of the snooze button, the soldiers of Fort Drum are already in the middle of their daily morning workout. Those extra five minutes aren't an option for them. Especially as they get ready for a brand new program known as Functional Fitness, which aims to prepare them for 'battle functionality.' As part of our special week-long series, our Brian Dwyer shows us that mixing the old workouts with the new isn't easy, and getting the mind as prepared as the body is the ultimate exercise.

Ultimate Exercise: Part IV Getting families involved in Functional Fitness

For many of the soldiers on Fort Drum, family and the uncertainty of how they're holding up during a deployment can be more stressful than deployment itself. And soldiers who can't focus on the job, put themselves and others in danger. So as the post readies a new physical fitness program, the Army is also trying to get families more involved. As part of our week-long look at the Army's move to Functional Fitness, our Brian Dwyer introduces us to two families who say this "ultimate exercise" is not only helping them at home, but also bringing them together when they need it the most.

Ultimate Exercise: Part V Opening the new Functional Fitness center

Our week-long look at Fort Drum's move to a new morning workout routine ends with the post officially cutting the ribbon on its brand new Functional Fitness center. Drum's Commanding General told a large crowd that this change isn't just about exercise, but it's change in culture. Our Brian Dwyer was at the ceremony Friday, and gives us a first look at what will certainly be a major part of the Major General Mark Milley's legacy - his "Ultimate Exercise" - as he gets ready to say goodbye to Fort Drum.
