ITHACA, N.Y. - Tully High School alumnus Lopez Lomong did not make it past the semifinals of the 1,500 meters in the 2008 Olympics, but he has reason to believe he will do better in the 5,000 meters in London.

Lomong, a Sudanese refugee who has a book about his life story coming out this month, just started running the 5,000 meters in February and three months later recorded the fastest time by a United States runner this year--a feat even more impressive as he mis-counted the number of laps and stopped running for a moment.

The 5,000 meter preliminaries are August 8 and the final is August 11.
