BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Shortstop Wilmer Flores was named the Mets' Sterling Organizational Player of the Year on Wednesday and pitcher Zack Wheeler was named the Double-A Sterling Recipient for being the organization's best player at that level.
Flores, just 21 years old, batted a combined .300 with 18 home runs and 75 RBI with Single-A St. Luce and the Binghamton Mets. Wheeler, age 22 and considered the top prospect in the Mets' entire farm system, went a combined 12-8 with a 3.26 ERA and 148 strikeouts in 149 innings for the B-Mets and Triple-A Buffalo.
All of the minor league award winners will be honored in an on-field ceremony at Citi Field on Saturday, Sept. 8 prior to the parent club's game with Atlanta.
