ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the second time in six years, the Cornell football program has hired an Ole Miss assistant coming off a Cotton Bowl win. Kent Austin is the latest Rebel to turn Red Wednesday morning, taking over for Jim Knowles a little over a month after he left.
Austin coming in with only seven seasons of coaching experience and five of those in the CFL. His two seasons as offensive coordinator at Ole Miss highly successful, 18 wins including two Cotton Bowls.
The 26th coach in Cornell history takes over a program that has only had one winning season the last decade and is 20 years removed from its last Ivy League title. But Austin says he's anxious for the challenge and jumped at the chance to come home to the Northeast.
Austin's the ninth all-time leading passer in CFL history and he's also 7-and-0 in championship games all time.
