UTICA, N.Y. -- The Cicero-North Syracuse boys basketball team claimed its first sectional title with a buzzer-beating three-pointer on Sunday to beat Proctor 61-60 in the Section III, Class AA championship at the Utica Aud.
After Walkery Mills put Proctor, the number two seed, ahead 60-58 with 18 seconds left, the top-seeded Northstars had a drive to their basket blocked and a jump-ball called with 3.4 seconds left. Possession stayed with C-NS and with Proctor's defense cutting off the inside, Anthony DelCoro put up a desperation three-pointer than went in off the backboard, sending the Northstars into a frenzy and sending Proctor's horde of hometown fans home in shock.
Cicero-North Syracuse next plays the Section II champion at a to-be-determined Section III site in the state regionals on Saturday.
DelCoro finished with 15 points, including four three-pointers, while Mills led Proctor with 18 points. Both teams shot better than 50 percent from the field, with the Northstars hitting 59 percent of their shots and the Raiders making 52 percent of theirs.
