UTICA, N.Y. - New Hartford baseball head coach John Randall admits he did not expect his young squad to do much in the playoffs after a 6-10 regular season, but to his and the players' pleasant surprise the Spartans are suddenly two wins away from winning a state championship.
New Hartford's five playoff wins have featured almost more drama than the team can stand with four being by one run and three requiring a rally in their final at-bat, including Thursday's quarterfinal matchup with No. 2-ranked Glens Falls in which the Spartans won 7-6 after trailing by two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Class A final four takes place Saturday at Union-Endicott High School. First up for New Hartford is Grand Island from Section VI in the semifinals at 1 p.m. and the championship game follows at 4.
