SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Trailing by three goals with less than three minutes to play, the No. 4-seeded Syracuse women's lacrosse team rallied to beat No. 5 North Carolina 17-16 in the NCAA Division I quarterfinals on Saturday.
Tewaaraton Award finalist Michelle Tumolo scored the game-winning goal with just five seconds remaining, which followed an assist for her on the game-tying goal and scoring the goal previous to that to start the winning run. She finished with four goals and an assist.
The victory sends Syracuse (18-3) to the national semifinals for the second time in three years. This year's championship weekend is being held at Stony Brook University on Long Island and the Orange will face top-seeded Florida on Friday. Syracuse has already beaten the Gators once this year, a 12-11 double-overtime win at Florida in March.
