UTICA, N.Y. -- Veterans are some of the most uniquely qualified workers in the job market and Tuesday, a special event gave them the chance to put their skills front and center.

A "Hiring our Heroes" job fair drew veterans from all over the Mohawk Valley to MVCC. It was part of a national effort by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to connect employers with veterans and their spouses.

The unemployment rate for veterans is above the state and national average. Those at the fair say it's a good way to let vets know what their options are.

"They really don't know that their work experience that they have goes farther than just their daily jobs in the military. Their leadership skills, their attention to detail , there's so many different objectives they've already completed," said U.S. Army veteran Gary Farr.

Organizers say 60 companies took part in the fair.
