ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Almost everything is in place for the new public transportation system to open in St. Lawrence County.
In December, the county's bus system closed down after the county said it did not have the money to keep it afloat. But a solution was found by teaming up with NYSARC, an organization that provides transportation and support for handicapped individuals.
Using their already current bus route, NYSARC's operation director says they will now be able to cover more area and it won't cost the county a dime, because it is funded by the state.
Buses will begin making daily stops next Monday.
"We want to get it going. We realize we're going to have to tweak it as we go along, but at least it'll be there so that people can ride it, they can take advantage of it and give us suggestions," said Jerry Filiartault, NYSARC Director of Operations.
NYSARC is holding public information sessions about the new public transportation system this week:
- Wednesday, May 16 at 5 and 7 p.m. at NYSARC Annex, 63 South Main Street in Norwood
- Thursday, May 17 at 5 and 7 p.m. at NYSARC Operation Office, 6 Commerce Lane in Canton
