BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- You might see a few ducks in the Chenango River every day, but this August, thousands will be floating down stream.

The Humane Society hosted a kickoff party for its annual Duck Derby Friday evening. For five dollars, you can adopt a rubber duck, then on August 11th, all the ducks will be dumped off the Court Street Bridge into the river and race down the Chenango. The winning duck's sponsor will win $3,500 and someone could even win $1 million.

Last year's derby raised around $20,000 with all the proceeds going to benefit the operations of the Humane Society in Binghamton.

"We have, right now, about 70 cats and 30 dogs, so right around 100 animals at any given time. So as you can imagine, it gets pretty pricey paying for all their vet care, anything from routine shots and checkups to emergency care," Laura Melville said.
