SOUTHERN TIER, N.Y. -- The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is working to make sure kids don't go hungry when school's not in session.
The Food Bank's Summer Food Service Program provides meals to children at risk of hunger free of charge in Chemung and Steuben counties. Meals are distributed on a daily basis in area parks with no registration required.
Across the Southern Tier, about 35,000 children rely on free and reduced price meals in school, so this program works to ensure they stay healthy until class is back in session.
"During the summer months, when they don't have access to those meals, the children are often left to fend for themselves. Sometimes parents are able to provide meals for them, often times children are preparing something for themselves so we want to make sure they have a nice brown bag lunch with some kid friendly, nutritious type items that the children love to come out for," said Missy Smith, Food Bank PR Manager.
The program runs until August 31st.
