10-year-old girl fundraising to save Walton Theatre

The Walton Theatre is in danger of shutting its doors. The theatre needs to raise $70,000 for a new digital movie projector so that it can continue to show films. Our Melissa Kakareka tells us what one little girl is doing to make sure the theatre gets the money it needs to stay open.

WALTON, N.Y. -- Ten-year-old Mara Little can remember the first time she ever visited the Walton Theatre.

"The first time I remember coming here, I was two and it’s a funny story. We went to go see a dragon play and it was these little kids and they would say ‘rawr’ and I'd run out then go back and watch the rest of it," said Mara Little.

Over the years, Little has performed and seen countless shows and movies at the theatre. But that experience could be taken away from her and the rest of the village if the theatre can't raise $70,000 to buy a new digital movie projector by the end of the year.

"What would happen is that if the movies closes down, the organization that runs the movies would not be leasing the building. The lease money would not be going to village and they would probably be somewhat tempted to close the building," said Walton Theatre Preservation Association Board Member.

That's why Little is fundraising to save the theatre. She asked for monetary donations instead of birthday presents this year and also held a bake sale last weekend, efforts that have already earned over $500 for the cause. Mara plans continue fundraising until she raises $1,000.

"Next I'm trying to plan a Halloween party and the money they get from tickets will go to the Walton Theatre," said Little.

Little says she also wants to inspire her friends and community members to do their own fundraising. A goal that many people say she has already accomplished.

"When this happened it was the perfect inspiration and all sorts of things have happened because of this," said Richardson.

Helping do her part to save the theatre so that others can enjoy it in the future.
