Torch on its way to Special Olympics games
Officers from the Great Meadow Correctional facility, Glens Falls Police Department and the New York State Police stormed Route 4 -- running, biking and driving -- as part of the 15th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Peg Adams of Special Olympics in Warren and Washington counties said, "It brings awareness to Special Olympics, and some in the community come out and cheer our officers on, and sometimes they even donate to the cause."
Local officers accepted the Special Olympics torch at the Essex County line, taking it to Glens Falls then to Mechanicville. Officers there will then take it farther south.
Kevin Smith of the Great Meadow Correctional Facility said, "We run one of the longer single legs in the torch run. The torch is run statewide."

The torch will ultimately end up in Hempstead, Long Island, for the Special Olympics Summer Games. The officers said running the torch is the least they could do to help raise awareness for Special Olympics.
Kyle Gordon of the Great Meadow Correctional Facility said, "I look at my own family, and they're healthy and secure, and these kids need more help than mine do. And it's just a great cause."
A cause that the officers said is well worth it year after year.
