ConMed planning to cut jobs
MOHAWK VALLEY, N.Y. -- One of the biggest employers in the Mohawk Valley plans to cut jobs.

Medical and surgical parts manufacturer ConMed Corp. announced it is closing plants in Rome and on Broad Street in Utica. The company will lay off at least 100 employees.

Many of the operations at the two plants will be consolidated into the company building on French Road in Utica. This is where the headquarters are located.

The company plans to move some manufacturing lines to Mexico where the cost of labor is cheaper. ConMed will still have 95 percent of its operations in the Mohawk Valley.

"They had to streamline their operations so they could stay here, and I give them all the credit in the world because they still are here and they are still employing over 1,000 people here and that's still great for our community. We don't want to lose not one job, but we're keeping 1,000 jobs, that's a plus too," said Utica Mayor David Roefaro.

The transition process will take place over a 10 month period.
