ANTWERP, N.Y. -- Friends, family, comrades and supporters said there last goodbyes Wednesday to their American Hero. Hundreds gathered to honor Staff Sergeant Tyler Pickett.
Pickett was killed June 8th by enemy forces in Iraq. If it wasn't for Pickett’s actions, some say more soldiers could have been killed. Pickett was serving his third tour of duty.
He was a member of the 1st Brigade Combat Teams, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment also known as "Triple Deuce." Pickett’s comrades say he will be remembered as a charismatic leader who always took care of his soldiers.
While off duty Pickett made a huge impact on the Village of Antwerp.

"Tyler was a big part of this community. People that knew him, loved him. The people who didn't at least knew his face ‘cause he was trying to do everything he could here while he lived here," said David Gerrish, Jefferson County American Legion Commander.
"I have not talked to a single person yet that knew him that just was not overwhelmed with his generosity and his personality and how much he meant to this community. He wasn't even from here and they adopted him and the families, just they're devastated," said Jerry Deon, Patriot Guide Riders.
Pickett is survived by his wife, Kristy, a stepson, stepdaughter, mother and father. Those who knew him say he believed in what he was doing and loved his country. They say it's time now to honor Staff Sergeant Tyler Pickett for not how he died, but how he lived.
During the funeral, Pickett was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
