CORTLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- The pregnancy pact among Massachusetts high school students has everyone talking.

And while the idea might seem extreme, the clinic in Cortland County does see teens who say they want to be mothers.

"Obviously the biggest service is contraception, but we do have teens come in for pregnancy tests, and some of them do want a pregnancy," said Carol Keegan, the Clinic Coordinator.

In 1990 Cortland County had 152 teen pregnancies. The county began educational programs, and by 2006 that number dropped to 75.

"We like to think that the programs and the educational awareness that we're doing is helping to reduce that," said Heather Roche, who runs the county's Zero Adolescent Pregnancy program.

Mary Dykeman teaches sex education in county schools. She says information could have helped the Massachusetts teens.

"I wish someone had gotten the message to them, here's some things to think about. If you're gonna have a baby you want to be the best mom you can be. And if you're gonna be the best mom you can be, you want to have these things in place and in order," said Dykeman.

The educators we spoke with said that communication is the key when you're talking to teens about pregnancy, and that it's never too early to start having those conversations.

"You're creating a bond and building foundation. So that when the questions get harder when they're teenagers, they're gonna come to you because they know you are open to them asking you questions," said Dykeman.

The county also stresses peer education, and arms students with correct information so they can inform their friends.
