Project Schools Open Safely getting underway
ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A new school year means it's time to slow down. That's the message Onondaga County law enforcement agencies are reminding drivers to follow.

Tuesday, police and school officials joined together to announce the annual launch of Project Schools Open Safely. In the next few weeks police will be on the lookout for drivers speeding in school zones and passing stopped school buses.

Police are reminding drivers to watch for children walking to school and slow down in the vicinity of school buses.

"If they see the yellow lights come on, on a school bus that means prepare to stop. So, if they see the yellow lights, slow down, be ready to stop and let’s get our kids to school safely this year," said Steve Rotunno with the Camillus police.

Police say they will be using both marked and unmarked patrol cars to enforce the law.
