Tessy plastics plans expansion
ELBRIDGE, N.Y. -- These are the sounds of business at the Tessy Plastics plant in Elbridge. Thanks to $35 million in investment over the last six years, the company is running out of room.

"We try to go after the high tech stuff and we've invested a lot of money into the plant over the last several years and try to do the stuff not everybody can do," said Tessy Plastics Corporation President Roland Beck.

Five years ago, 30 percent of Tessy's business was automotive, but not anymore. The company changed its customer base and that restructuring is now leading to expansion.

It's in a grassy area right behind Tessy's west plant where the new 40,000 square foot addition will go up.

"It’s for growth in mostly medical. It’s molding of medical products and assembly of medical products also," said Beck.

Tessy caters to medical giants like Welch Allyn and Johnson and Johnson. It also makes consumer products like deodorant cases for Gillette.

Despite a 17 percent jump in raw material costs this year, Beck says Tessy's new model has helped them stay competitive.

"The customers that we have now are much open to passing along those price increases than some of the customers we had in the past and again, that's one of the reason we target the customers we have now," said Beck.

Tessy currently has 580 employees locally. The new expansion will likely create 20 new jobs. They expect to break ground next week, with construction complete by February.

Tessy also has operations in Virginia and China. They have about 1,000 workers globally.
