Teen raises money to build a special playground
PHOENIX, N.Y. -- Meet 17 year old Samantha Furco, a senior at John C. Birdlebough High School in Phoenix. She's undertaking a project that few kids her age would even care about, let alone carry out.
It all started one day at her brother's football game. She noticed a little boy in a wheelchair, watching other kids play on the playground.
"He couldn't play on the playground with the rest of the kids, seeing his little brother play and not him it's kind of heart wrenching,” said Samantha Furco.
So heart wrenching that Furco went on the internet and researched wheelchair accessible playgrounds and decided she wanted to raise money to have one built in the area for kids with disabilities, a task that seemed easier said than done.
"It took awhile to get people to take me seriously because I am only in high school still,” said Furco.

One person who did take her seriously was Paul Kasler, the town supervisor in Schropel. After seeing an article in the paper about Furco, Kasler called her to offer some help.
"I called her that day that I read it and I said I think we have a spot for her. I told her that she needed to come to the board meeting and present this in front of the board and when she was at our next board meeting she presented it to the board and the rest of the board voted unanimously to approve it,” said Paul Kasler Jr., (R) Schroeppel Town Supervisor.
If they raise enough money, the playground will be built at William Farley Junior Community Park in the town of Schroppel. Furco says it'll cost about $51,000 to build the playground and her goal is to raise $70,000. So far she says she's raised about $5,000 toward that goal.
"It just makes me feel a lot better about myself knowing that I can help somebody that needs help,” said Furco.
While most kids Furco's age have hobbies like playing sports or video games, her hobby is volunteering. Furco volunteers with the Special Olympics and also is a candy striper at the hospital.
Now she is trying to help build a playground for a child she only met once, and her efforts aren't going unnoticed.
"She's a wonderful addition to this community. To have her be able to come up with this idea and then go out and do it. We need more people like that in the community,” said Kasler.
Furco says she is hoping to become a nonprofit organization so she can receive grants to help her raise money for the playground.
Samantha Furco plans on holding a spaghetti dinner fundraiser Sunday, November 2nd at RFH's Hideaway restaurant in Phoenix to raise money for the playground.
