Thruway tolls to increase Sunday

Thruway tolls to increase Sunday
NEW YORK STATE - Starting on Sunday, people traveling along the New York State Thruway will see a five percent increase, both cash and E-Z Pass customers.

The additional revenue will allow the thruway authority to pursue important capitol projects that will be used to maintain the highway and its bridges, along with ensuring that everyday maintenance activities can be performed. Those we spoke with saw both sides to the issue.

"It's always a little bit incremental and it's not really people don't really notice it but over time it adds up and it tends not to go down ever so that probably would be my objection to that type of thing," said David Light of Maynard, Massachusetts.

"I'm in sales and I'm on the thruway quite a bit. I really appreciate how well the thruway is maintained, as far as the winter time and summer time and it's not going to affect me personally," said Joseph Duffy of Rochester.

As to whether the price increase will have an affect on you, well, that's for you to decide. And to do that, you can simply head to the thruway website to find out price differentials. Let's say we're taking a trip from Utica, exit 31, to Syracuse, exit 35.

As of Sunday the trip will cost you two dollars and ten cents. Beforehand it would have only cost two dollars, an increase of ten cents.

New York isn't the only state increasing toll rates. The Pennsylvania Turnpike will raise prices 25 percent starting Sunday, and those traveling along the Mass Pike could see a future increase as public hearings are underway throughout the state.
