Couple allege Oswego County kennel neglected dog
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Doney the French Bull Dog didn't have a good winter break according to his owners.

Dara Rosenthal and her boyfriend left the dog at Ann Margarete's Kennels in Pennellville while they were on school break.

They say the dog lost nearly 10 pounds, was dehydrated and lethargic when they picked him up three weeks later.

"We took him on the 9th just right from the kennel to the vet. They said he was extremely malnourished and extremely dehydrated," said Rosenthal.

Rosenthal says this is what Doney looked like before he went to the kennel, weighing in at just just under 30 pounds.

She took pictures the day he was picked up, when she says he weighed under 21 pounds.

"When they brought him out he was literally just skin and bones, like nothing else, you could see his rib cage when he breathed," said Rosenthal.

We were unable to reach the owner of the kennel, but a spokesperson for Ann Margarete's says the dogs at the kennel are weighed when they're brought in, and that Doney only weighed 21 pounds when he got there in mid-December.

The spokesperson says Doney was very hyper and that it's common for dogs to not eat the first few days they're at the kennel.

Rosenthal says any other time Doney's been left in a kennel he hasn't had any health problems.

"We left him so far two other times and he came back perfectly fine. I called them 3 times when I was in California and every single time I called they said he's eating fine, he's doing great, he's having fun, ya know, he's acting normal and they never gave any indication that he was getting thin," said Rosenthal.

The staff at the kennel had no problem with letting News 10 Now go inside and looking around to see the condition of the animals they're boarding.

The spokesperson for the kennel says they never get complaints about the treatment of their animals and that she thinks Rosenthal's complaint is revenge because she didn't want to pay the full cost of the boarding.

But Rosenthal says money was never an issue. She put the entire bill of just over $460 on a credit card.

Rosenthal and her boyfriend have filed a report with the Oswego County Sheriff's office.

They are trying to get back the money they spent to have their dog boarded, as well as the cost for the vet bills they got for having Doney checked up once he left the kennel.
