County bans texting while driving
SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Schuyler County legislators passed a law that prohibits anyone from texting while driving. It’s a law that has drawn mixed reactions from many people, mainly because they are questioning whether it will really be enforced.

Under the law, drivers are prohibited from sending and reading text messages on their cell phone while operating a vehicle. The proposal was introduced by a county legislator who felt too many people were risking their safety and the safety of others while at the wheel.

Some people say the point is moot because they don't see current laws being enforced to keep drivers from talking on their cell phone.

"The sheriff supports the legislation, but the sheriff follows that up with the support that it’s difficult to enforce. We have limited man power and cell phone use and texting becomes a difficult enforcement issue,” said Schuyler County Administrator Tim O’Hearn.

Legislators say the ban is effective immediately and anyone found in violation of the texting while driving law is subject to a fine of up to $150.
