Schumer to present legislation to prevent "Another NYRI"
ROME, N.Y. -- Signs celebrating NYRI's withdrawal could be seen as Senator Schumer announced plans that he says will prevent another NYRI.

The Senator will present legislation that would entail three parts. First, the Governor would have veto power for any future projects. Second, transmission routes would need to follow existing rights of way, rather than creating a new path. And third, any project must go through a public hearing in every community affected.

"We have to make sure that community input is paramount when sighting transmission lines and that our ability to determine our own future is never seeded to bureaucrats in far away Washington," said Schumer.

The announcement came as a relief to those who were against the power line project.

"I think that is absolutely critical to making sure that we don't have to fight this fight all over three years from now, six months from now," said Eve Ann Shwartz, co-chair for Stop NYRI.

Though Schumer says he's confident that NYRI has completely pulled the plug, others are not convinced.

"I think we have not heard the last from them and I think it's really, really critical that we keep our eye on the ball, that we don't let our guard down," said Shwartz.

For now though, those opposed will consider this a victory and wait to see if the legislation will be passed.
