Siblings receive award
LEWIS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Three Lewis County siblings were recognized for the care they have given their great-grandfather.

Michaela, 12, Shauna, 8, and Landon Rice, 2, received Outstanding Youth Volunteer awards from the Alzheimer's Association's Central New York Chapter.

Their grandfather suffers from dementia. A family friend nominated the children for the award after she observed how they cheered up their grandfather and other residents at a Lowville nursing home.

"Like, you just go visit him and you help him if he needs help and you can wheel him around in his wheelchair," said Michaela Rice.

"To take a few minutes, share a smile, share a touch, sometimes that's all that's needed and it may not necessarily be the words that you find, but just being present in the moment with them makes all the difference in the world," said Catherine James, Alzheimer’s Association of CNY Chapter CEO.
