Canastota searches for the roo
MADISON COUNTY, N.Y -- There's a wallaroo on the loose in Madison County! He's been hopping around loose for weeks, but didn't grab our attention until he was spotted near the Thruway on Wednesday.

It's been spotted near the Thruway in Canastota, but there were no sightings on Thursday. The loose animal is a wallaroo. A wallaroo is of the kangaroo family, just smaller. And Chittenango resident Rebecca Jenson captured it on camera several weeks ago. But Canastota residents are still keeping their eyes open.

"Even coming into work today, from hearing about it, you find yourself actually kind of looking around to see if you see something jumping around. It's a big story in a small town," says Gene Beardslee of the Chatterbox Diner in Canastota.

"Every corner I turn, every red light, I'm constantly looking for a three foot wallaroo. And I'm gonna wear my helmet and my seatbelt and take precaution!" says Sherrill resident Deliah Porter.

"I think it's bizarro more than anything. It's a kangaroo loose up here," added Tim Jones.

Jeff Taylor, owner of the runaway roo, asks anyone that sees him to avoid catching him because he spooks easily. So if you see the roo, contact the state police. Villagers, in the meantime, are keeping their eyes peeled for an unexpected sight.

"We'd love to actually see it around here, but I doubt it's gonna come into the village!" Rolland Gustin told News 10 Now.

Perhaps the roo made a pitstop at the International Boxing Hall of Fame? Roos are known for their boxing ability. And the Hall of Fame is next to the Thruway where the Wallaroo was spotted!

"Everybody is talking about the loose kangaroo and we're looking ourselves here at the Boxing Hall of Fame. Every once and a while, we walk by the window and look out to see if we see that kangaroo coming down!" said Ed Brophy, Executive Director of the International Hall of Fame.

If you see the roo, leave it alone. Instead, call New York State Police in Oneida at (315) 366-6000.
