CNY Works employs youth
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- CNY Works doesn't just find jobs for adults, they're on the clock for the youth, too! Young people throughout Onondaga County can learn not only how to prepare for a job, but two to land one, too!
Long lines, neat ties and careful attention. That’s what young folks ages 14 to 24 have to learn before they sit down for a job interview.
"This is a good opportunity for people my age to get a job. You know, I'm trying to get a job so I'll stay out of trouble and get better work experience," said Evander Coleman, a Fowler senior.
Some want lots of hours to pay off student loans and other things. For others, not so much.
"I'm more of a party person, you know, maybe Monday through Friday I'll work!" said Lincoln Middle School eighth grader Cheyenne Brandon.

David Wood is a freshman at SUNY Potsdam. "I currently have a job that doesn't give great hours, so I'm looking to get a second job on top of that and just pay for college bills and stuff like that."
Now for the employers, this is actually a good gig because they don't have to foot the bill when it comes time to cough up the paycheck. That's what CNY Works does!
Said Andrea Schnobrich, CNY Works' Youth Services Manager, "We have over a million dollars to help employee youth and we also receive tanna funding for youth as well. So we have a good amount of money to employ a good number of youth."
Not only will close to a thousand of them end up working, they'll walk away with skills they didn't have before they came in.
College freshman David Wood explains, "We started with an interview seminar where they kind of gave you tips as what to do in an interview, how to present yourself in an interview and we came down here, went to a table, they asked you some questions form a basic interview, what skills do you have that you think would be good on the job site, how would you resolve a conflict."
For many, the only conflict they have is who will get the job they want!
