BURLINGTON FLATS, N.Y. -- There are Memorial Day events across the region Monday to remember those who have died while serving our nation, and one ceremony in Burlington Flats will honor a local hero who died earlier this year.

Army Corporal Michael Mayne, 21, was killed in Iraq in February. He died along with two other soldiers when insurgents attacked their unit.

Mayne had been scheduled to return home this month. At Monday’s ceremony, his family will be presented with the State Senate's Liberty Medal.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. on County Route 51, ending with the ceremony at Burlington Flats Memorial Park.
