Community trying to cope with tragedy of Champion car crash
JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- The death of four Jefferson County teenagers and one unborn baby has the community working together to overcome the tragedy. All five passengers in Saturday's crash in the Town of Champion were friends. Two were sisters, one of them seven months pregnant.

"Heard a car go by at a fairly high speed, which we're all too used to on this road. And heard a commotion and a loud bang, and then the power went out," said Pastor Leonard Flack, who lives near the crash scene.

"This one was particularly much faster than you typically hear and I just knew it was going to be bad," said John D. Peck, who lives near the crash scene.

Those who were at the crash site Saturday night on County Route 47 in Champion say the scene was one they wish they could forget, but never will.

"It was horrible. There was debris everywhere and we just tried to find as many people as we could because we didn't know how many people had been in the car," said Flack.

When Flack arrived, he realized he had been childhood friends with 18-year-old victim David Van Epps, who died Sunday night from his injuries.

"Lots of memories as kids, just playing video games at their house, you know, all the stuff kids do, playing. There was a playground in the middle of the apartment building area," said Flack.

"Every call like that, when you hear it, you think about, man how devastating for the family that's involved in the accident," said Don Gill, Felts Mills Fire Chief.

Little did the Felts Mills Fire Chief know at the time of the call, that he knew two of the victims and is a friend of the family.

"We actually heard the call go out for Great Bend and a few of us were standing by the fire barn. Come to find out they didn't call us because it was two daughters of our fireman," said Gill.

Gill works as a volunteer firefighter with Bud Yeman, father of victims: 18-year-old Susan Melgar and her sister, 14-year-old Denise Yeman. Susan Melgar was also a volunteer firefighter and was seven months pregnant with baby Anabel.

"She's a very giving person, come around the fire hall when she was available to and help us out, wash trucks, clean the building," said Gill.

Gill says the Felts Mills Fire Department is still in shock but they are trying to work through the tragedy as a community.

The fourth victim was 17-year-old driver Becky Besaw of Watertown. And the final passenger, 23-year-old Tara Armer of Fort Drum, is remains in the hospital.

The funeral for Susan Melgar, her unborn baby and her sister, Denise, is also set for later in the week.
