ITHACA, N.Y. -- Police have released more details about the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a woman's body in the Town of Ithaca.

Police say on Tuesday, during a routine patrol near Taughannock Falls Park, a state parks police officer pulled over a man who appeared to have blood on his clothing. The man drove off and led police on a five minute chase before crashing into a group of trees. Police removed the man, Blazej Kot, 24, from the vehicle and discovered he had a weapon and a self-inflicted wound to his neck.

Due to evidence from the scene of Kot's arrest, police then responded to a fire at the apartment Kot shared with his wife, Caroline Coffey, 28, on Taughannock Boulevard.

After putting out the fire, crews discovered no one was in the apartment. That's when police launched a search for Coffey.

On Wednesday morning, two hikers in Cass Park discovered Coffey's body four miles from her home. An autopsy revealed Coffey died from cuts to her neck and blood loss.

Both Kot and Coffey were graduate students at Cornell University. Kot is a doctoral candidate, while Coffey was a post-doctorate researcher.

Police are ruling this as a homicide, though no charges have been filed yet. Investigators also determined that the fire was intentionally set.

Kot is currently in stable condition at the hospital.
