Expert gives tips for graduates
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The high school seniors graduating with the class of 2009 should take time to celebrate their accomplishments. But at the same time, experts say seniors should be pro-active this summer because that fall semester will be coming fast.

After graduating this weekend many seniors will begin making plans for vacation or maybe they will start a summer job. While that may be the best plan for them, officials at Colgate University say there are a few things seniors should do to ready themselves for that first year of college.

Beverly Low is the dean of first year students at Colgate and specializes in preparing and helping students adjust to college life. She says first of all, students should unwind by planning and taking a trip this summer.

Low says students should also get on a weekly spending budget, which helps prevent spending money unnecessarily once the semester begins. She says students should learn to share space with others especially if they plan to have a roommate in the fall.

And Low says students should stay fresh by reading in their free time and staying up on current events.

"So those are a few things that I think would be useful for folks to think about who are coming to college. And, you know it's not going to solve all their problems, but pick three or four of those things and maybe work on them over the summer, it might make things go a little bit easier, a little smoother when they come to campus," Low said.

Low says websites like Facebook can also help first year students learn more about their campus, clubs and their future classmates this summer.
