SCOTLAND -- The man convicted in the deadly bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland may be released.
Sky News and BBC Television are reporting that Abdel Basset al-Megrahi will be released on compassionate grounds because he has terminal cancer. But the Scottish official in charge says no decision has been made.
Al-Megrahi, a former Libyan secret service agent, is serving a life sentence for the bombing which killed 270 people back in December 1988. Thirty-five of those victims were students from Syracuse University.
Al-Megrahi was convicted in a Scottish court in 2001, but there is much debate in Europe over whether he was behind the attack and families of American victims have long said there has never been a final answer.
