The only person ever found criminally responsible for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 was released from prison Thursday.
Abdel Baset al-Megrahi served just eight years behind bars. Scottish authorities let the terminally ill terrorist return to Libya, so he could spend his last days with his family.
Two local men who lost relatives in the 1998 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland reacted to the news.
“It was very disgusting for me to see this morning him boarding a plane, taking off from Scotland to return home to his family,” said Bob Hunt of Webster. His daughter, Karen died in the bombing. “It’s something my daughter and the other innocent people on that plane did not have an opportunity to do.”
Paul Halsch’s wife Lorraine also died in the bombing. She was pregnant at the time, and the couple had an 11 month old daughter.
“I would have preferred him being sent home from Scotland in the same way my wife was,” said Halsch. “That would have been in a box.”
A total of 270 people died in the attack.
