SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Hundreds of Onondaga County workers rallied outside the Oncenter on Thursday, protesting proposed cuts in next year's budget.
Legislators are holding a public hearing inside the Oncenter on Thursday night. The county budget totals a little over a billion dollars, but it calls for cutting 50 county jobs and cutting back hours for 2,000 others.
The CSEA is the union which represents a majority of the county workers. A spokesperson for the group says cutting employees hours would put many of them into the part time category. The CSEA says they want to send a message to legislators that the county shouldn't be balancing the budget on their backs.
The county argues the budget cuts are necessary to trim a multi-million dollar deficit.
County legislators will vote on the budget Tuesday.
The union says if it is passed as is, they will consider taking the county to court.
