ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Several students from Ernie Davis Middle School in Elmira travel to Syracuse University today to help honor one of the greatest college football players who ever played the game. Ernie Davis, who grew up in Elmira and was the first black Heisman trophy winner, will have the field inside the Carrier Dome dedicated in his honor. It will be called "Ernie Davis Legends Field."

The middle school's modified football team, along with about twenty five members of the Express Club and staff will be recognized at halftime in Davis' memory.

"We had a game yesterday and I was really worried that they were more focused on going to the Syracuse game than they were going to our own game, but they played well yesterday, they've lived up to their end of the bargain and behaved and now they're all excited and really chompin' at the bit to go," said A'Don Allen, Ernie Davis modified football coach.

Syracuse is taking on West Virginia in today's game.
