ROOSEVELTOWN, N.Y. -- A 23-year old Akwesasne Mohawk will retrieve the Olympic Flame from Greece. Aronhiaies Herne is one of eleven Aboriginal youths who have been chosen to be a youth flame attendant. He's traveling to Greece where he will help transport the Olympic flame back to Vancouver, British Columbia for the 2010 Olympic Games.
Herne will monitor the flame during the longest domestic relay in Olympic history.
"For our people, anything to do with fire is a big deal, because we believe it is a source of power and who you are is your flame. So for us, as Aboriginal, it is a big deal to have to take care of that flame," said Herne.
Two other Akwesasne Mohawks have also been chosen to participate in the torch relay, Mike Benedict Jr. will be a community torchbearer. Howard Thompson will be an Honorary Elder Firekeeper.
